1. If you’re planning your trip in advance, try to schedule your stay during the slow part of the year and during the week. Weekends are always the busiest time for any hotel or motel. A weekday stay will almost always ensure a lower rate. If you can schedule your visit during a slow period of the year, so much the better.

2. Most hotels will extend discounts to certain organization members and government employees. If you have a membership in AARP, AAA, or the military, for example, you can almost always request, and get, a discount.

3. Sometimes the rates offered online and the rates offered directly will differ. If you can, be sure to check online as well as call ahead to determine the rates being offered and which is lowest. If you are offered a higher rate at the hotel desk, you can then point out that the online rate was lower (if that’s the case) and the hotel may honor the lower price.

4. Generally, the longer you stay, the steeper the discount. Be sure to mention if you’re planning a long stay and request a discount if it’s not offered. Often those staying longer will also receive extra perks, such as a room closer to the elevator or one with a better view at no extra charge.

5. People who walk into a hotel late at night can often expect a discounted room. Better to let a room go at a discount than to let it lie empty.

6. Always ask for a free room upgrade. The worst that can happen is they will say “no” but chances are, the may just say “yes”. Be prepared to accept the room you paid for, but there’s no harm in asking for comps or an upgrade.

7. Reserving your room far in advance of your stay is also another way you may rate a discount. If you can, be sure to reserve your room in advance and secure your reservation with a valid credit card.
